Southdale is a newer part of the city than most of the areas we serve, developed largely from the 1970s onward, and that shows in the housing. Homes here are generally larger and better laid out for aging than the older bungalow stock elsewhere in Winnipeg: wider doorways, bigger bathrooms, attached garages that remove the walk from car to door in February, and frequently a main floor that can accommodate a bedroom if needed. Structurally this is one of the easier areas in the city to age in place. The population is also aging in a particular way. Many Southdale residents bought here as young families in the seventies and eighties, raised children, and are now in their seventies and eighties in houses considerably larger than they need. The recurring theme in our assessments here is not an unsuitable house but an oversized one: too much to clean, too much yard, too many rooms nobody enters. Light housekeeping and practical help therefore feature more heavily in Southdale care plans than in some other areas. Amenities are car-oriented, with Southdale Centre covering everyday shopping, so as in Charleswood the loss of a driver's licence produces a sharp change and transport becomes central.
